Landscape Study of Women’s Funds and Foundations – Part 1

The central aim of this study is to add necessary insight into what we know about who, what, and how women's funds and foundations - within the WFN alliance - approach their work. This subgroup is important because WFN member funds not only share values, but they also share the ability to create the local enabling partnerships and resources that scale successful prototype projects and catalyze short, and long-term success. Further, WFN's operating premise is that large scale social change comes from collective impact and catalytic leadership versus the isolated efforts of individual organizations. WFN creates a deliberate space for learning, reflection, and dissemination of the most promising practices. Specifically, at this moment of global change, it's necessary to examine this subset of women's funds and their activities at the intersections of racial and gender justice.This report is the first a series of three reports. Part I focuses on the people and organizations in our alliance; Part II will examine programming strategy including advocacy and grantmaking priorities; Part III will discuss how women's funds shift power through equitable community-based grantmaking.

Tales of Roma Women's Resistance: Roma womens organizing in southeastern Europe

This collection of stories explores the diverse realities of Roma women, girls and LGBTQI+ people, as well as the realities of activists who advocate for change on the frontlines in the Southeast Europe region. Building on 19 semi-structured interviews with activists conducted between 2018 and 2022, this research also examines the intersectional nature of the challenges that Roma girls, women and LGBTQI+ youth face in their specific contexts, through the prism of activists who have been tailoring their approaches to address and advocate for these issues.

Forgotten by Funders

This report highlights the underfunding of work with and for imprisoned and formerly imprisoned women and girls,  alongside a worrying increase in the global female prison population. The report draws from the survey responses of 34 organisations, most of which are based in the Global South and have women with lived experience of the justice system involved with or leading their work. Calling to donors that fund human rights, women's rights and/or access to justice, the report concludes that this heavily gendered area of human rights tends to fall through the cracks of donor strategies, including recent Gender Equality Forum pledges.

The Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Gender Equality: Problems and Solutions : Meeting Final Report

The COVID-19 pandemic has deepened the current social problems and intensified inequalities, having destructive effects in terms of women's rights and gender equality. This meeting report reflects exchanges between 29 organizations working in the field of gender equality, in order to share the concerns about women  and girls.In the first part of the meeting which started with the opening speech of the Chair of Sabancı Foundation Board of Trustees Güler Sabancı, field observations and foresights about the pandemic's effects in  terms of gender equality in the world and Turkey were shared. In the second part of the meeting, solution and suggestions for collaborations were discussed in three break-out sessions: "Violence", "Economy,  Employment, Entrepreneurship" and "Gender Equality, Education, Participation".

EFC Gender Equality Network: Initial Gender Mainstreaming Assessment

Sexual Exploitation : New Challenges, New Answers : 5th Global Report

Based on the analytical work of Observatoire international de l'exploitation sexuelle (International Observatory on Sexual Exploitation), Fondation Scelles' 5th Global report on sexual exploitation around the world aims to provide a clear vision of the current situation, suitable for furthering the awareness-raising on the issues around sexual exploitation and the reflection on the urgent answers needed.It includes reports on 35 countries and 11 main topics from 2016-2018.The work produced comes from a wide range of sources, all of which reflect not only events related to studied issues and that happened over the last three years, but debates and controversies that have left their mark in the news.This study was carried out by an international writing team (USA, France, Argentina, Ukraine, Zambia…) from various backgrounds (sociology, political science, international relations, human rights, international law…), and by expert practitioners (lawyers, judges, and procurers in particular).Original report is available in French.

Re-Claiming the Narrative for Social Change : Mapping a Philanthropic Response

This report provides the results of a broad stroke mapping of initiatives supported by various European and American philanthropic bodies. These initiatives aim to leverage the power of strategic communications, and in particular, effective narratives, to counter the closing of civic space and to achieve positive social change. It is intended as a real-time snapshot of ideas and approaches to capture what is being done and where, identify gaps, and share learning on new pathways and solutions for narrative change. The mapping includes some initiatives that fall outside the philanthropic community but which have potential for further exploration and/or adoption.

Promoting Gender Equity Lessons from the Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program

Despite the growing focus on gender parity in higher education and the fact that in many wealthy nations women outpace men in tertiary enrollments, statistics show that in parts of the developing world, women are still underrepresented. In South and West Asia, for example, only 74 women are enrolled in higher education for every 100 men, whereas in sub-Saharan Africa, there are only 62 women enrolled for every 100 men (UNESCO, 2010).Even in countries where they have achieved parity, women face other issues of inequity and marginalization, from domestic violence to a lack of female leadership in government. While there are no simple solutions for these complex and wide-ranging problems, promoting advanced education for women—particularly those that are devoted to ameliorating such issues at the grassroots level—is a crucial step. Not only does it build the skills and capacities of those working to promote gender equity, it increases their chances of advancing to positions of power from which they can affect change.As part of its mission to provide higher education access to marginalized communities, the Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (IFP) sought to address gender inequality by providing graduate fellowships to nearly 2,150 women—50% of the IFP fellow population—from 22 countries in the developing world. This brief explores how international fellowship programs like IFP can advance educational, social, and economic equity for women. In addition to discussing the approach the program took in providing educational access and opportunity to women, the brief looks at two stories of alumnae who have not only benefitted from the fellowship themselves, but who are working to advance gender equity in their home communities and countries.Activists, advocates, and practitioners can draw upon the strategies and stories that follow to better understand the meaning of gender equity and advance their own efforts to achieve social justice for women and girls worldwide.

Gender Balance Initiatives in Research Funding : Barriers and Possible Measures to Increase the Share of Women within Natural Science and Technology

The objective of this research memorandum is to identify and describe what constitutes the significant barriers against achieving a better gender balance at Danish universities, in particular within natural sciences and technology.The memorandum also addresses the question of the possible role of research funding institutions in relation to gender imbalances in academia, and in particular which actions and measures have been put in place in order to prevent women from remaining disproportionately underrepresented.Based on desk research, this research memorandum presents in total six promising practices and short summaries of existing experiences regarding what works in addressing the gender gap in research funding. While the identified gender balancing initiatives and measures stem from numerous national contexts, each of them are characterised by focusing mainly on one specific part of the grant allocation process – whether it be early in the process, where measures such as certification of applicants and/or earmarked funds are a possibility, or while applicants and projects are being assessed, or in the post-award phase, where measures to ensure public accountability for funding schemes and counteracting the motherhood penalty are distinct possibilities. Following the presentation of the promising practices below is a number of clear and concise recommendations on possible actions to be taken.

Girls to the Front : A Snapshot of Girl-led Organising

This participatory, feminist, intersectional research report explores some of the creative and impactful ways in which girls are bringing about social justice in their communities. It placed girls at the centre, making them partners of the study. The research used in-depth interviews and an online questionnaire, as well as an exhaustive desk review to collect data from girl-led groups and organisations, girl-centred organisations and the stakeholders that support them at different levels.

Nonprofit Diversity Efforts : Current Practices and the Role of Foundations

Based on survey responses of 205 leaders of nonprofit organizations with annual expenses between $100,000 and $100 million, this study provides a collection of data on topics such as how diversity relates to the work of nonprofits and what demographic information nonprofits and funders alike are collecting — and how that information is used.The data in this report can inform foundation leaders and staff as they consider how they can most helpfully engage with their grantees on the topic of diversity.
