Taking the Pulse of the European Foundation Sector : Moving from Proving Impact to Improving Impact

January 1, 2022

This report contains key insights, survey data and case studies from the first year of the European and Spanish Communities of Practice on Impact Measurement and Management (IMM), coordinated by the Esade Center for Social Impact with the support of BBK. These groups of foundation professionals from 15 countries have come together to increase the level of transparency, knowledge-sharing and exchange within the European foundation sector on this topic. Building on the transcribed discussions and surveys of approximately 40 European foundations, the authors have developed several learnings they hope will help the whole European foundation sector, as well as any other organizations that want to measure and manage their impact. In this perspective, the report also includes tables outlining what the different 'levels' of practice might be, so that the reader can understand what the impact management learning journey looks like at different stages (beginner, on the journey, and advanced). In addition to the present report, the following page provides links to the recording of the launch of the report as well as presentation slides: https://www.esade.edu/en/faculty-and-research/research/knowledge-units/center-social-impact/research/community-practice

Forgotten by Funders

December 1, 2021

This report highlights the underfunding of work with and for imprisoned and formerly imprisoned women and girls,  alongside a worrying increase in the global female prison population. The report draws from the survey responses of 34 organisations, most of which are based in the Global South and have women with lived experience of the justice system involved with or leading their work. Calling to donors that fund human rights, women's rights and/or access to justice, the report concludes that this heavily gendered area of human rights tends to fall through the cracks of donor strategies, including recent Gender Equality Forum pledges.

1.5-Degree Lifestyles: Towards A Fair Consumption Space for All

October 1, 2021

This report uses a science-based approach to link concrete changes in lifestyles to measurable impacts on climate change in order to achieve the 1.5-degree aspirational target of the Paris Agreement on climate change. The report also fills the knowledge gap arising from most prevailing climate scenarios that underplay the potential contributions of lifestyle changes to climate change mitigation and focus on developing new technologies as well as on changes in production.A summary for policy makers and individual sections of the report can be dowloaded here: https://hotorcool.org/1-5-degree-lifestyles-report/A recording of the report launch is available here:  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLncecPWTUt9l_I0hQzg3BpGkkTz-h2uhG

Foundation Horizon Scan: Taking the long view

November 1, 2019

This report explores the challenges foundations and grant-giving organisations will face over the next decade in order to maintain their legitimacy and impact. Nesta worked with the Centre for Public Impact on a literature review, carrying out interviews with 25 leaders in the field from the UK and internationally. Drawing on these insights, the authors isolated signals of change in the sector and focused on several 'clusters' of foundation practices. Finally, they highlighted some of the strategic choices that foundations will need to manage in the coming years. Along with the report, Nesta created a worksheet to help organisations understand where they sit on the spectrum of strategic choices described in the report, as well as a collection of seven 'provocations' on the future role of foundations over this pivotal decade.

This report provides the results of a broad stroke mapping of initiatives supported by various European and American philanthropic bodies. These initiatives aim to leverage the power of strategic communications, and in particular, effective narratives, to counter the closing of civic space and to achieve positive social change. It is intended as a real-time snapshot of ideas and approaches to capture what is being done and where, identify gaps, and share learning on new pathways and solutions for narrative change. The mapping includes some initiatives that fall outside the philanthropic community but which have potential for further exploration and/or adoption.
