The COVID-19 global pandemic exacerbated longstanding disparities by race, gender, and socioeconomic status. Individuals, communities, and countries that were already vulnerable were even more at risk. The Choosing Change toolkit can help individual donors and institutional grantmakers at all levels identify proposals and teams whose work addresses the structural inequalities that prevent people from surviving, let alone thriving.
This brief grew out of conversations with evaluation and learning leaders working in foundations across the United States about both the value of evaluation and learning in philanthropy, and the challenges of implementing this function well across diverse institutional contexts. Our intent is to provide practical guidance that new and existing leaders can use to navigate their roles in support of more effective and equitable philanthropy. It is based on indepth case studies of the Irvine, Kauffman, and Kresge Foundations along with our own experience partnering with foundations on evaluation, strategy, and learning efforts.
This report contains key insights, survey data and case studies from the first year of the European and Spanish Communities of Practice on Impact Measurement and Management (IMM), coordinated by the Esade Center for Social Impact with the support of BBK. These groups of foundation professionals from 15 countries have come together to increase the level of transparency, knowledge-sharing and exchange within the European foundation sector on this topic. Building on the transcribed discussions and surveys of approximately 40 European foundations, the authors have developed several learnings they hope will help the whole European foundation sector, as well as any other organizations that want to measure and manage their impact. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: The Pillars of Stronger Foundation Practice is the first report emerging from the Stronger Foundations initiative. It sets out nine characteristics of excellent practice in a foundation, which include collecting data on diversity, implementing DEI practices in funding activities, and making itself accountable to those it serves and supports.

This guide is based on research conducted by The Engine Room and Ariadne, with contributions from 360Giving, between March-October 2018. The project was supported by Digital Impact (part of the Digital Civil Society Lab at Stanford University). It is useful for funders who want to improve their data management practices and are looking for resources to help as well as (human rights) funders or grantmakers worldwide who want to treat data about their grantees responsibly, but do not always know where to start.The publishers of that guide believe that funders need to start with clear, open conversations with grantees and other funders about how they collect and share data. This document, based on inputs from more than 40 human rights funders, aims to help funders have these conversations. It lists common questions that grantees and funders might ask, combined with advice and resources to help answer them. Its content is organised around three elements of the grantmaking lifecycle: data collection, data storage, and data sharing.
