This study represents another milestone on the journey of supporting philanthropic practice in becoming more inclusive and closer to those it serves. It is based on: a survey of and interviews with 40 European philanthropic organisations; focus group interviews with children and young people involved with these organisations; and 11 case studies of participating organisations. The study provides recommendations and clear examples of initiatives by foundations along this journey, which can be used to spark discussion on the various modes and phases of participatory philanthropy, whatever the target group or thematic area.
All over the world, states, organizations, municipalities, and private businesses are struggling with how to solve complex and wicked problems.In 2014, Realdania launched several projects and partnerships based on the Collective Impact method, which was developed in North America. Collective Impact is a systematic and data-based approach to working with complex agendas within broad, long term partnerships.Since then a wide range of Danish parties has tackled different problems such as homelessness, local climate planning, and social mobility among children and young people using this method or approaches inspired by it. Realdania has, in this publication, collected, described and reflected on learnings from seven cases – some of the first cases in Europe using this approach.This publication aims to contribute to cross-sectoral reflection on experiences and key areas of learning.
This Funders' Toolkit for Child and Youth Participation is the result of a research study commissioned by the Elevate Children Funders' Group to better understand child and youth participatory models used by funders. The toolkit was co-created by a group of young leaders, and with the guidance of an advisory committee and the ECFG Child and Youth Participation working group. It is the first of its kind to offer support and guidance on the substantive "how-to" of child and youth participation - tailored specifically to funders. Shifting the Field: Philanthropy’s role in strengthening child- and youth-led community rooted groupsApril 1, 2021
In 2019, Elevate Children Funders Group commissioned the exploratory study, 'Philanthropy's role in strengthening child- and youth-led community rooted groups.' The objective of this study was to map current practices in philanthropic support for child and youth led work at the community level and provide strategic advice to donors on how to strengthen their funding modalities through participatory approaches to achieve greater and more effective impact. The findings and recommendations from this process—conducted through literature review, key informant interviews, focus groups, and online surveys with funders, child- and youth-led community rooted groups, and non-funders—articulated in this report will pave the road for members of ECFG to challenge their own practices; build on the broader philanthropic momentum to shift money down to the grassroots level; explore ways to influence the broader philanthropic sector; and influence and shift the wider donor community thinking and approaches.
What is the potential of children's play to promote equality in outcomes and address learning gaps between children from more advantaged and less advantaged backgrounds? Drawing evidence from early childhood learning programmes across 18 countries, as well as from interviews with the authors of various contributing studies, this report aims to understand whether and how the evidence about play and learning relates to tackling the learning crisis, especially in terms of inequality in learning outcomes around the globe.This report published by the LEGO Foundation shows that play not only helps children learn, it also supports inclusion, and reduces inequality, therefore demonstrating that policymakers and international organisations need to pay close attention to play. Building on their findings, the authors suggest four areas for future investment, innovation and investigation.

Based on the analytical work of Observatoire international de l'exploitation sexuelle (International Observatory on Sexual Exploitation), Fondation Scelles' 5th Global report on sexual exploitation around the world aims to provide a clear vision of the current situation, suitable for furthering the awareness-raising on the issues around sexual exploitation and the reflection on the urgent answers needed.It includes reports on 35 countries and 11 main topics from 2016-2018.The work produced comes from a wide range of sources, all of which reflect not only events related to studied issues and that happened over the last three years, but debates and controversies that have left their mark in the news.This study was carried out by an international writing team (USA, France, Argentina, Ukraine, Zambia…) from various backgrounds (sociology, political science, international relations, human rights, international law…), and by expert practitioners (lawyers, judges, and procurers in particular).Original report is available in French.

This research, driven in partnership by the British Council and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), looks at the reasons why some national governments invest in supporting outward mobility scholarship programmes. The study aims to improve our understanding of why governments sponsor these programmes; how they are designed, administered, and funded; who participates and where they study; and what impact the programmes are having.The report contains detailed case studies of 11 countries and their approaches to national outward mobility scholarship programmes, with comparative case study analysis and recommendations for countries looking to establish or develop outward mobility scholarship programmes.
Switched On brings together recent research and evidence about key issues related to digital inclusion, with a particular focus on children and young people. Digital access is complex picture with multiple factors driving, compounding and impacting those who are included or excluded.The report explores a number of features of the digital inclusion debate including analysing the components that comprise appropriate digital access, examines the impacts around a lack of access, maps exclusion factors in the UK and outlines the current policy and practice landscape, including successful interventions.
11 case studies that highlight the outstanding work girls have been doing around the world. Rather than being selected by the report's funders and researchers, these case studies were selected and prepared by the Girl Advisors involved in the Girls to the Front research study.
This participatory, feminist, intersectional research report explores some of the creative and impactful ways in which girls are bringing about social justice in their communities. It placed girls at the centre, making them partners of the study. The research used in-depth interviews and an online questionnaire, as well as an exhaustive desk review to collect data from girl-led groups and organisations, girl-centred organisations and the stakeholders that support them at different levels.
This online story, published by the Bernard Van Leer Foundation, is part of the 'Historical Cases' series. It intends to collect lessons from the past experience of the foundation in Nicaragua from 1981 to 2008.Learning questions raised by this story include:How can we best take advantage of historical moments in a country to accelerate progress towards scale? How does this factor into our own decision making?How to diversify our partnerships and our approaches (for example, advocacy versus field projects) to ensure continuity throughout inevitable political changes in government?When making plans for scale, is it always desirable to aim for universalisation? Or is it better – from a quality standpoint – to advocate for a more targeted approach to specific populations of children and families?
